Seed phrases turn a wallet into twelve words

BIP 39 encoded a wallet's master secret as an ordered list of common words.

The word list was chosen so that entries remain distinguishable when handwritten and can be identified from their first four letters, with a checksum catching most transcription errors. It became near-universal across wallets despite never being a consensus rule.
