Nick Szabo publishes bit gold

Szabo described a currency in which solved computational puzzles are chained together and timestamped.

Each solution became the input to the next, producing a verifiable chain of work that no participant could cheaply forge. Szabo had circulated the design privately since 1998 and never implemented it.
