Bitcoin Core v30 relaxes the OP_RETURN limit

The release raised the default size of data a node will relay in an OP_RETURN output, splitting the developer community.

The default datacarrier size moved from 83 bytes to 100,000, on the argument that the old cap merely pushed data into forms that are worse for the UTXO set. Opponents argued it invited blockchain bloat and legal exposure for node operators, and directed users to Bitcoin Knots, whose share of listening nodes rose above a fifth of the network.
