Hashcash proposes proof of work

Adam Back announced a scheme that required a sender to burn measurable computation before a message would be accepted.

Hashcash asked a sender to find a partial hash collision, a task that is expensive to perform and trivial to check. It was aimed at email spam and denial-of-service abuse rather than at money.
