The IRS treats virtual currency as property

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service said convertible virtual currency would be treated as property for federal tax purposes.

The guidance applied general property-tax principles to payments, mining income, wages, and capital gains or losses. It rejected treating bitcoin as foreign currency for federal tax calculations.
