Japan's crypto-exchange registration regime takes effect

Amendments to Japan's Payment Services Act introduced a registration and consumer-protection regime for cryptocurrency exchanges.

The law defined virtual currencies for regulatory purposes and required domestic exchange operators to register with the Financial Services Agency. It also imposed anti-money-laundering, identity-verification, disclosure, and customer-asset segregation duties.
