OCC confirms U.S. national banks may custody crypto assets

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said national banks and federal thrifts may provide cryptocurrency custody services.

Interpretive Letter 1170 treated safekeeping of cryptographic keys as a modern form of traditional custody. Banks still had to manage operational, compliance, and security risks under existing law.
