A U.S. court treats bitcoin investments as securities

A federal judge held that bitcoin could be used as money and that Bitcoin Savings and Trust interests could fall under securities law.

The ruling rejected the argument that the court lacked jurisdiction because transactions were denominated in bitcoin. It did not declare every bitcoin or bitcoin transaction a security; it addressed the investment contracts offered in the Shavers scheme.
